My “Christian Women in Media” Event Keynote Speech!

Last Thursday, I spoke at a the New York Christian Women In Media Dinner.  Aaron Horton and Johanna sang an incredible song that brought me to tears and then before I knew it, I was asked to come up for my speech.  Still dabbing my eyes, I went into my speech and wasn’t sure how well my message got across, but received loads of compliments afterward and I just wanted to touch more people with a recording and transcript of it since it seems to have helped so many people.  Enjoy!

DownloadJeanette Eng Keynote Speech!

Hi, I’m Jeanette Eng and I’m honored to be here tonight, to share with my fellow Christian Women in Media. Now, I had this whole speech written out, recorded in Garage Band, converted into mp3 format, and playing in my ipod while I ran, hoping that I could subconsciously program it into my brain. Hey I’m Chinese and a stickler, what can I say?! But that all went out the window last night when I was at a power women event hosted by Sukyana from Channel 11. She hosted with such flair and humor and ease…all without notes! So, I said, out with these notes, I’m gonna do the same! And then I came to my senses!

So, let’s get started. I know that for me, it helps me “get” people when I get their story, so to say, so I’ll give you the standard introduction.

I’m a commercial actress and model and spin instructor, working in NY and living in NJ. I’m 32 years old. I started as a Journalism major at Rutgers University and my first job out of college was writing for a local paper. That was the end of my print career. I decided TV would be much more exciting and then just followed the bright lights. To make a windy story short, church reporter led miraculously to red carpet hosting, which led to commercial acting and modeling, which I have been living off of for 4 years…which in this industry, is like tenure!

Ok, that’s it for my Facebook profile. Now, let’s get into the meatloaf of the night, shall we?!

I have been a Christian for most of my life but it is only recently that I have begun to truly mature in my faith and as God would have it, also hitting my stride professionally and personally.

As I mentioned, I was at an event last night that celebrated Power Women. Women in media were present, but these women represented excellence in all fields, from entertainment to film making to business, from Iman to Sade Baderwinwa to Lisa Ling. I was the reporter assigned the task of asking these women “how do you summon your power,” a clever wordplay on the theme of power women. And I received all sorts of answers, from my family to my children to doing a job that I love, but I never heard doing it for God. And that’s my vision…that one day, I”ll be interviewing one of you and that you will be the one to give me that soundbyte.

But I did get some great tips from these women and I don’t think it’s a coincidence, but a God-incident, that I’m experiencing two female power themed events back to back. So in that spirit, I’d like to share 3 stories about what I believe helps us tap into our power source, our Lord, Jesus Christ, to reach our God-appointed power potential.

This first story is about
Following the Burden in Your Heart.
God has to speak to us somehow, am I right? And one of the ways, I truly believe, is through what many people will call gut feelings, nudges. I believe that if you have a God inspired moment like this and you receive affirmation of it and it simultaneously terrifies you and gives you peace, you need to pay attention to it. L
Case in point, I took a commercial acting class and was exposed to a population of improv’ers and comedians that I really took to. At one point in the night, I realized, sadly, that I was probably never going to see many of these people again. And the Christian in me was heartbroken, wanting to connect with these people beyond this one evening of performance and drinks and laughs. But it just wasn’t realistic for me to invite them all to church, or for me to go to all their shows, or for all of us to somehow become coffee grabbing buddies. And so, my heart was burdened.
At the same time, I realized that I was being charged up the “you know what” for this commercial acting class that, in my opinion, did not command such a price tag. I realized that I could mimic this formula of theirs and probably help a lot of people out by doing it for free. And the wheels started spinning.
Well, within a few months, we held our first Actors In Christ meeting, affectionately referring to it as Actors InC w/ a capitol C, for Christ ;) . And fast forward one year, we just celebrated our one year anniversary of meeting every Monday. We have a consistent turnout of 20-30 actors. We consider ourselves equal parts acting workshop and missional outreach. We have brought actors to church and to God and helped them nail auditions and land roles. And one of the actors from that original acting class, whom I felt burdened for, is now one of our leaders.

As Christians, we often have this dilemma. We exist day in and day out, in our unique industries and various circles of friends and acquaintances. How much of God do you share with these people and do you feel a burden in your heart to do so? If that’s the case, my plea to you is to follow that burden to a solution that enables you to bridge that gap. Someone in our church works in a financial firm where he began sending daily inspirational verses to his co-workers…now, there are several hundred Wall Street men and women on this mailing list. And I can just imagine how much life has changed for him, now known as a Christian amongst his peers.

So, once again, follow the burden in your heart…it’s from God for a reason and to you and it’s for a reason.

This second story is about:
Biting off more than you can swallow and trusting that God will help you chew.
Some of the best things that have happened in my life have been the things that were the most daunting, the most unplanned, the times that God had to help me chew. Francis Chan wrote in his book, “Forgotten God,” “I want to live in such a way that I am desperate for Him to come through. That if He doesn’t come through, I am screwed.” And as a pastor, he acknowledges that he probably shouldn’t use that word, but he doesn’t feel that any other word expresses his feelings as well! And he goes on to challenge us to live a life that screams, “This could have only been made possible by the hand of God!” Like Gideon’s army, we want people to look at our lives and know that this was some sort of miracle, this was not simply of our own skill and network, but something infinitely and mysteriously greater. And, in order to do that, we have to step out on faith, step out on those burdens, and trust that God will meet us when we need Him. He wants us to set the bar so high, think so big, that it would be impossible on our own. How exciting is that call to action? To think big, and then think even bigger on top of that? We don’t do that enough!

I was guilty of it when I embarked on my first missions trip last summer. It took me over a decade to do my first missions trip because I was “ye of little faith.” I looked to my bank account, my lack of experience, my time constraints…and they all told me, you’re in no position to go on a missions trip! Yet, when I went for it, God raised the $3,500 that I didn’t have, gave me the missional mindset, and made it all not only possible, but a life-changing trip for me. It was this missions trip that planted the seed for Actors InC.

But I committed the same crime just months later, when just a week shy of the launch of Actors InC, I tried to delay it. I wanted to prepare more, become more qualified to lead an actor workshop, get rid of this voice in my head that kept taunting me, “who do you think you are, leading an acting workshop, you’re still taking them!” But God spoke through one of my brothers, who would not allow me to delay the launch…he said, “God will make it happen.” And so I took a big ole bite!
This is nothing new. We’ve all heard
“It’s easier for God to re-steer an object in motion than to move a parked object.”
“God, I’ll take care of the quantity and you take care of the quality.”
Start your vision and the provision will come.
So ladies, this is one area in which I denounce portion control! Go and start biting away at the God’s plan for you!

This third story is about:
Being excellent in what you do and being honest about your faith.
All things stem from this and go back to this. Tim Tebow is an example. Oprah can be cited as an example. Jeannie Mai is an example. Megan Alexander is an example. And we should all hope to be household names one day…names of people excellent in their craft who give all the glory to God. It’s started to happen to me lately, where people are seeking advice from me and time with me, and are simply marveling at “how I do it.” And these are my golden opportunities. I couldn’t ask for a better platform on which to reveal that I thank God for it, that I prayed over it, and won’t you come to church with me?
If you live this way, “being excellent in what you do, and being honest, and I mean, raw honesty, about your faith,” I can assure you that you will be challenged…there’s no way to live this way and not be.

And cue, my 3rd story. I was recently on a shoot for Shape Magazine. On this shoot, I had to do 100 exercises over the course of 3 days! And I executed those exercises with excellence, holding poses for much longer than is recommended! And never once did I complain or display diva-behavior. In short, I displayed excellence in performance, attitude, etc. And when the shoot wrapped on day 3, I was so joyful that I again felt this burden to say a prayer with these people who had been my family for the past 72 hours. And so I asked. I asked these people, whose faith was unknown to me, to “just humor me and join me in a quick prayer of gratitude, before we leave?” And so, there we stood in the studio, heads bowed and hands joined, as I thanked God for a successful shoot and prayed over each person’s individual life. It was scary for me, but to have done anything less than that would have been a lie. Honesty is still the best policy and so, if you are honest about your faith, you will talk about church when asked what you did this weekend, you will say grace even at a business lunch, and you will be the same woman in church as in the world.

And excellence for God is one of the best motivators! There are times when I’m swimming and literally thinking to myself, this is for God because this exercise is going to make me more excellent. Whether I’m running a race, getting dressed, exercising, auditioning, or any of the multitude of tasks that we have to complete in this life, doing it for myself doesn’t always cut it, and when I switch to doing it for God, suddenly, the drive is back. Doing it for God is certainly a reason to get up in the morning!

And honestly, the success, accolades, and money will come. Last night, I was in a room full of CEO’s, Bestselling authors, the president of Jenny Craig, all clad in glittering gowns and smelling just lovely. And people wanted to know how these women do it. And there is truth in the clichés because these women testified t it. The soundbytes I collected included, “Do what it is you’re passionate about and the money will follow.” Lisa Ling really drove this point home when she pointed out that she doesn’t even know how much money she has, she just does what she loves. And I believe her and it’s comforting to see living proof that that works. Other sentiments were, “Stay true to yourself,” “mentor and inspire others…go outside of yourself to affect the world.” These women were in a position of influence and were given a platform on which to share whatever it is they wanted. When Iman got up, she went into a whole schpiel about her charity, attempting to connect with us in 5 minutes about the women she is trying to save in the Congo. It was a bit much, like a mini-lecture, but I applaud her efforts. And my prayer is that one day, one of us is up there, just as passionately ignorant of our time restriction, using those 5 minutes to glorify God.

So at the end of the night, I was kicking myself for not inviting Lisa Ling, Sukyana, and Robert Dinero’s wife here…sorry Suellen! And that made me realize how unique we are. Because in a room full of media women, I didn’t experience one who was clearly a believer. We are a demographic that represents a slice of an already small slice! So, it’s vital that we all play a role in supporting CWIM, not only returning, but returning with someone new every time. As we grow in excellence and gain more clout in our respective fields, it becomes even more important to bring that back to CWIM and God will continue to bless us…abundantly, accordingly, and powerfully.

Thank you!

“Help Me Howard” profiles Me!

In the midst of promoting my missions trip to the Himalayas like crazy, I contacted a reporter I knew, Howard Thompson, of Help Me Howard, in a long-shot attempt to gain him as a celebrity guest at our fund-raiser.  He declined my invitation.  And counter-invited me to do an interview with him to be featured on WPIX11!  Here it is!

There is power…in Christian Women In Media

Megan Alexander, oftentimes seen on “Inside Edition” stood before us last night at the Christian Women in Media Dinner and did not begin spouting news stories or “stories from the front lines” or behind-the-scenes gossip.  No.  She got up and quoted 1 Peter 3:15: “…Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.  but do this with gentleness and respect…”  She brought us back to her humble beginnings in San Antonio, where she had to first make a decision as to whether or not she was going to be “Megan Alexander, the Christian, or Megan Alexander, the fun, quirky, hip tv host of “Good Day, S.A.!”  She decided that she was going to be Megan Alexander, the Christian, and never looked back.  She struck the balance between thriving in a secular industry and striving inspired by God.

Megan gave us homework, as well.  “Do good work,” she said.  She went on to explain that especially in New York City, where the sharpest minds are, it is essential to be able to hold your own.  And she doesn’t believe it’s the case that Christians are not welcome in the industry, but rather that they are not “in the mix,” and so she instructed us to us to get in the decision-making chairs, get in the meetings, and be in the rooms where things are happening.  In addition, she stressed the importance of building long-lasting relationships.  “See relationships as ends in themselves,” she offered, noting the radicalism of that in a city where everyone wants something from someone.

Christian Women In Media

She encouraged us to fight.  “When you’re proud and you know that something is right, fight for it.”  Alexander fought for a pastor to be featured on “Good Day S.A.” and ended up having a hand in one of the show’s highest-rated episodes.  She fought for an interviewee’s testimony that included mention of God because she knew that it was crucial to the story…and for a greater purpose.  Her final message to us was to “master our crafts” because we can “preach the gospel, and use words when necessary.”

Last night was incredibly encouraging because in a room full of producers and reporters and hosts and writers and singers and creatives in the media industry, we shared the ultimate bond: love for God.  And so, in every success story, credit was given to Him.  In every piece of advice, reference was given to seeking God’s guidance.  Punctuating every powerful moment was a sealing prayer.  It was like a networking party where everyone worked for the company, God Inc!

I’m a devour-er of inspirational information, whether I have to read it, hear it, attend it, or travel to the Himalayas for it, I always have an appetite and aspiration for greatness.  And to be around women who possessed greatness in the industry as well as in God was awe-inspiring.  I took away from last night that God and media can not only co-exist, but are actually complimentary!

the surefire way to “Be Great”

Excerpts from Pastor Adam’s message at msny on Sunday, June 12, 2011:

Ephesians 2:10
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
This verse asserts and promises us that God has a mission and a purpose for everyone’s life.

Interesting fact:
Only in the case of Christianity is it the case that the same gospel that saved before is saving today.  For example, Islam has remained in Arabia & Mecca.  Buddhism is still in the Far East.  Hinduism began and still is in India.  Christianity, however, began in Jerusalem and is now everywhere.  It jumped over seas, across the world, and seems to work for all people.

Pastor Adam tells the story of a woman in the gym [as an ex-hockey player, "the gym" doubles as his missions field!] in which she garners the respect and interest of everyone around her, men & women alike, when she proved extremely successful at achieving her goals.  The takeaway?  Pastor Adam says: Be Great.  The Gospel should be producing amazing fruits in your life.  Let people see that and evangelism becomes much easier.  If you are not, ask yourself “Why not?!”  As per the parable of the sower [Matthew 13], could it be because you don’t have roots?  Let the Holy Spirit work in you.

It’s ok to not be ok, but it’s not ok to be ok with not being ok.

Being OK w/ just Jesus
Jesus cannot be a means to an end.  ie: I will believe in Jesus so I can be blessed.  I will do this so that I can get that.  He is the end.  In the story of Job, he loses everything, but as long as he had God, he was ok! Paul wrote the book of Paul from within the confines of a Roman prison!  Let your roots run deep so you can understand the true gospel.
Adam jokes that in a marriage: “mine” becomes “hers!”
Un-jokingly, however, in the same way, our relationship to Christ is a marriage and we must give it up to Him.  Don’t let the pursuit of competing gods choke your relationship w/ God.

The thief comes to steal, kill, & destroy.
Jesus comes to give peace, joy, & abundance.
John 15 says that if you obey his commands, He will give you abundance.

As I was swimming last night, during the last 10 minutes, I hit my stride and realized to myself that being great for God is probably the most motivating reason to be great.  Doing it for myself, selfishly, starts to lose its luster after a while.  But doing it for God never gets old.  I realized that no matter what I’m doing, if I think about doing it for God, I can always find the wherewithal to press on.  And so, Pastor Adam’s call to us to allow the amazing fruits in our lives be the testimony that draws people to ask for “some of what what you’re having” is all that I need to “be great” and to do it “for God!”

Long days, short nights…

On Set for Xfinity

…a cab driver said this to me the other day in explanation to “how he was doing.” I thought it quite clever of a saying and quite enjoyed it, as morose as the meaning of it actually is! After the last two days of my life, however, I must say that I can commiserate with him. I’m attempting to do the whole “look for the lessons” thing, so here it goes:

Humility & Love. I am not “all that.”
On set for a fitting the other day, I pranced in expecting the “Jeanette treatment”..to be accommodated, to be complimented…by golly, to be treated nicely!  Instead, I was minimally acknowledged, borderline reprimanded, and just treated plain rudely! Furious, frustrated, and confused, I couldn’t wait to get out of there…to salvage my spirit as well as my schedule. I realize now, however, that I was being checked for my pride. Yes, I am talent and yes, I do get my hair and my makeup done, but I am just as much a part of the production as the guy who picks the chips up off the floor. I cannot walk around with a “holier than thou” attitude. Just as much as people will sense my humility and take to it will they sense my conceit and attack it. “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up.” -James 4:10

Grace & Joy. Go easy on myself.
On sets, there is ample opportunity for cast, especially those in your scene, to get to know one another.  A camaraderie helps the day go by quicker and is sometimes essential to creating chemistry on camera.  On this particular day, I didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin and kept beating myself up for not being “on”…not being “the best that I could be”…part of me honestly wanted to hide away and put myself out of my misery.  I allowed myself to accept all this negative self-talk.  Looking back, however, I realized that in lieu, I really need to accept myself in these moments.  I’m not always gonna feel like those Jirmack bounce back beautiful hair commercials (remember those!?) or any commercial, for that matter, in which the woman is prancing down the street with all the world at her fingertips.  I have my “Jirmack” moments, but my value and love for myself should have no contingencies.  “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well”(Psalm 139:14)  God don’t make no junk so I gotta love me!

Patience & Faithfulness. I cannot control others.
After an emotionally trying experience on set, I was ready to go running with some ladies I had organized a run with.  The idea of releasing my stress into the fresh air and absorbing the advice and companionship of some female friends was so delicious to me.  I was so looking forward to it!  And lo and behold, no one showed up.  Great.  Just what I needed.  Another disappointment.  Another frustration.  Another question to God as to “Why?!”  Well, I ran on my own.  And enjoyed it still.  I decided from this experience that whether I run on my own or with another woman or twenty other women, that it’s time dedicated to God and has no attendance requirement.  And it’s not my place to impose it.  My job is to make sure Jeanette shows up and beyond that, it’s up to God.  “Let go and let God!”
There were so many other things that I learned during these past two days, but I’ll keep it at this for yours and my sake!  Onward to a better, brighter, and more edifying day.  Thank you for all the blessings that I have and the lessons that I’m learning.  Peace and hair grease!

Send me to the Himalayas!

THE BACKSTORY: I’m going on a service trip to the Himalayas and I want you to come with me! Through your financial support, you can be a critical component of this effort!  This seed was planted last summer, when I embarked upon my first service trip to Taiwan. I was spiritually awakened, shaken, and re-committed.  In retrospect, this trip was the catalyst for a wealth of astounding developments this past year.  One of the most impactful individuals that I met during my time in Taiwan was Professor Hsieh, a mountain-climbing former gangster, now professor, who has dedicated his life to doing good for people in God’s name.  He journeys on an adventure service trip every year, combining a physical feat with a philanthropic effort.  He might as well have been the Pied Piper [except with good intentions!]…I wanted to follow this man wherever…he was that powerful!  And my excitement only rose as he described the physical feat of climbing the Himalayas.  To read more about him, read this post.

2010 MISSIONS TRIP TO TAIWAN:

THE MISSION: Cut to 6 months later and I was e-mailing him to learn of the details.  And here I am, signed up and ready to start raising the funds!  The trip is around the corner and I have $5,000 to raise.  This 25-day trip will begin on July 25th when I fly to Kathmandu, Nepal to join the students of Taiwan Sport University and Tunghai University.  Together we will trek through the Himalayas until we reach Mt. Annapurna, where we will help the villagers of this mountain.  Our service to them will include providing medical assistance, conducting a summer camp, and building a latrine.  And no doubt, we will be praying for them and loving on them the whole time too!

THE TASK AT HAND: So as I mentioned, $5,000 needs to be raised, as the cost of the missions trip is NTD 95,000 [$3,300] and we have to first fly ourselves to Kathmandu.  It’s very daunting to think that if that money does not come through God’s grace, then it may have to come through American Express…but I’m not going to worry, because I trust God more than that!  I was floored by the financial support I received to get me to Taiwan last year and I look to this year to be another powerful testimony!  I came very very close to not fulfilling the financial requirements last year and I don’t wish for that again!

THE ASK: And so, I ask you, as my friend, brother/sister, family, and soon-to-be-friend, please open your wallets and give just a little bit to send me to the Himalayas to pray for and provide for the people in need over there.  It’s a solid effort in its 7th year of successful adventure service efforts.

Winning in Life

Some gems from Pastor Adam Burt this A.M.  Thank you for speaking these “words of life!”

NEVER RETIRE:
You never retire in God’s Kingdom.  You just get a new job…your mission remains the same.  The statistics on the number of people who actually use their retirement plan is small because they’re pushin’ up daisies too soon after to do so.  It’s because we’re intrinsically wired to do things…too long without doing something and you’re disengaging from life.  In the same way, when we retire, we are still doing God’s work
THE PURPLE AVENGER:
At a laser tag game, Pastor Adam was on a team with a 14-year old kid who jumped up on a stage, strapped on a purple headband, and started taking control of the team.  He told everyone what they were going to be doing, whether they were his age or 36 and as comical as it was, it worked, and by the end of the night, everyone was frantically asking, “What do I do, Avenger?!”  In the same way, Paul, while in prison, was still leading the apostles who were outside of the prison walls.  He sent apostles to Ephesus and other cities, told them to take his Bible, and was just still in God’s game.  Paul never retired.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS:
While watching a certain MMA fight, Adam witnessed the pursuer became the pursued and the final win was sealed when one competitor ran up on the side of the cage and with a powerful kick, knocked his opponent out.  In the same way, we are told in I Peter that we are being hunted by Satan,  who is stalking us like a lion, hiding in the grass.  But we can overcome!
THE NAVY SEALS:
Pastor Adam goes to San Francisco to minister to the Navy Seals and realized that he would never want to do some of the things they do in training.  In one part of their training, they swim underwater until they pass out and then their dive partner will give them oxygen and when they come to consciousness, they’re on the boat.  In the same way, we have to do life with people like this.  We need “Lukes” who will be there when the times get tough.
FACING YOUR FEARS:
Once upon a time, a pre-pastor Adam asked Pastor Ron Lewis to be his mentor.  Adam expected that he was going to be following Ron around and soaking up great life lessons.  But Ron instead, forced Adam to do all this work he didn’t want to do.  Stricken with a fear for public speaking, Ron forced Adam to share his testimony before large groups of people!  And the one time Adam thought he was “off the hook,” Ron asked him to pray The Prayer for some new believers.  Adam said it was a sad display of the Sinner’s Prayer, but he’s so glad that he went through all of that.  And he’s an amazing speaker today!
SPEAK LIFE & DESTINY:
Someone (DL?) once told Pastor Adam that he was going to be an influencer and inspiration to masses.  As a young person, hearing this was life-changing and life-giving.  But it’s not just kids that need this.  Adults are hungry for words of life.  So speak life and destiny into people!
WANTING HATERS:
If you stand for God, you will have haters.  The Bible is offensive.  If you want everyone to love you, then just be the most agreeable person you can be.  But if you want to stand up for something, you will inevitably offend people.  And that’s a blessing…the concern exists when someone is too well-liked.  Adam had to choose to offend a very key player in his hockey career when he was told to put the Bible down to prevent offending someone.  As Adam looked around at some guys “reading” “picture magazines,” he realized that he would have to choose what he wanted to stand for.  Luckily Adam did not get traded for his conviction, and God traded that man instead!
My recap does Pastor Adam’s messages no justice, as his strength is in his enthusiasm and talent of story-telling.  Please check this sermon out when it comes out on podcast or just come to an MSNY service to get a front row seat!

Be Brilliant…be a “Brillionaire”

Simon T. Bailey…what a force…what a presence.  His words mobilize crowds towards brilliance…his catchphrases ignite them to live out their messages…his anecdotes are rich with relevance and hope…and his infectious giggle thankfully makes this larger-than-life presence relateable.  His challenge to the millions who have heard him is to believe that you are designed for brilliance and live out that truth.  It’s something we all know, but can never hear too often.  He came to MSNY today and told us once again.  Thank you, Simon T. Bailey, for this…

Just because I lose doesn’t make me a loser.
A setback is a setup for a comeback
Ask yourself, “What is my universal assignment?”
The greatest tragedy is not to be dead.  The greatest tragedy is to be alive and not know why.
When you tap into your brilliance, everyone that you need will come into your sphere as if summoned to…because where there is vision, there is provision.
To tap into your brilliance, ask yourself these 4 questions:

  • where have I been?
  • why am I here?
  • What can I do?
  • Where am I going?

Believe that you are a “brillionaire” and “people need to know me.”
Studies have shown that as kids, we work at a genius level, but by the time we grow into adulthood, only 2% of us operate at our genius level…because society tells us we “can’t have that,” or to “put that back,” and tells us about all the impossibilities.
But Jesus said, “I have come that you may have life, and that you may have it more abundantly.”
When you know who you are and Whose you are, you dominate the marketplace.
Ask God to help you dominate the marketplace in your generation to change nations, generations, and systems.
The future is for sale, go buy it!
Be the difference that makes the difference.
When you have the Holy Spirit, he will teach you things that you don’t know about.
You are supposed to be the best of the best
Take on the posture that: “I am a big deal in the kingdom of God” and people will ask you for help.  Your life may be the only Bible they are reading.
You can be a public success, but a private failure.  Too many are overexposed, but underdeveloped.
When you tap into your universal assignment, God’s brilliance will shine through you.
Become intentional about creating your present
Act local, and think global.
When you solve a problem or provide a solution, people won’t care about the price [as opposed to selling service/product]
The stream from which you drink from is the stream you think from is the stream that you become.
Whoever has your ear has your life.
You may have a 50×60 dream, but be telling someone with an 8×10 frame of mind.
The word “education” comes from the Latin word “educo,” meaning “to draw out”
Someone has to ask you the questions to draw out your brilliance/ to stretch you
You have to know someone who knows more than you
Leaders are readers and readers are leaders.
You cannot lead if you do not read
When the brain is worried, the brain is not creating new neurons.  Read The Harvard Business Review or Fast Company. Realize that as you’re reading, your brain is creating new synapses and brain cells.
Books to read:

  • Positivity
  • Practically Radical
  • Synchronicity
  • The Power of Pull
  • The Word of God

Create a mastermind group that will entertain the question “What are you going to do to change the world?”
Make a date with destiny:
On 11/11/11, where do you want to be?  Where do you want to be socially, spiritually, financially, in education, in wellness, etc?
What difference do you intend to make in life?  Some people plan their vacations better than they plan their lives.

The stream from which you drink from is the stream you think from is the stream that you become.
When Simon was having a tough time in marriage, upon closer examination, he was hanging around guys who were married, but not marriage-minded.
What stream are you drinking from?
Pablo Picasso: A woman asked him to draw her a picture in a cafe and he drew an image of the waiter and when she went to take it, he clarified to her that it would cost her $10,000.  “But it only took you 10 minutes,” she said.  “No,” he corrected her.  “It took me 50 years.”
How you value yourself determines how you speak to yourself determines how you treat yourself.
When you know your value, you unlock your inner Picasso.

I have highlighted the questions that need to be asked and the actions that need to be taken.  I will begin doing these things tomorrow.  I have ordered the books [use thriftbooks.com for $4 used copies!] and will begin reading them as soon as they arrive.  I will begin following Simon T. Bailey on Twitter.  I’m making sure that I’m on the path to brilliance…and you better do it too!

Purpose #3: To Become like Christ

Inspired by the Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren

Becoming Christ-like, I’ve just learned, is our 3rd purpose in life, following worshiping God and being a part of God’s family.  Becoming Christ-like is also a life-long process and even then, it is only in heaven that the final stages are fulfilled.  This process of sanctification requires going through life’s difficulties, not unlike other facets of life, in which you must go through the “pain” for the “gain”, or in how a diamond must be buffed and chiseled to reach it’s full potential.

It’s easy to agree that hardships build character and that stories of struggle oftentimes make the best ones.  So, in the same way, God allows for trials in order to build our character.  Each time we triumph over losing our cool, we’ve built some patience.  Each time we love our enemy, we’ve built compassion.  Each time we smile in the midst of sorrow, we’ve built joy. And before long, we’ve matured some of our fruits of the Spirit, bringing us closer to Christ-likeness.

The trick, however, is in living this belief by becoming better, not bitter.   We aim to ask to be “conformed,” not “comforted.” We strive to remember that God’s plan is good and that he has equipped us for success.  and our knowledge of his authority and perfect goodness can intelligently bridge that gap for us.  God is not always able to speak to us; we closed that direct line of communication long ago.  But he uses his Word, his people, and his world to guide us through this journey.

By giving His Word authority in your life, by interchanging with fellow believers, and by holding  onto your faith through trying times, you are doing what God needs for you to, getting closer to Christ’s likeness, and fulfilling your life purpose!
